Interview par Email du bassiste d'Architects, Ali DEAN, à l'occasion de la sortie de leur nouvel album "Hollow Crown" le 26 janvier 2009 chez Century Media.
LAM : Votre nouvel album possède, d'après moi, un son plus agressif et plus technique. Etes-vous d'accord ? Pensez-vous que cela soit une évolution logique?
Architects : Je dirais que c’est clairement un album avec un son plus agressif en comparaison avec notre travail précèdent mais je pense que nous lui avons cette fois éviter l’écueil d’être trop technique. Néanmoins, nous voulions faire un album un peu plus rentre dedans, nous voulions aussi le faire très heavy donc oui, c’est logique qu’il paraisse plus agressif.
1° Your new album 'Hollow Crown' is from my point of view more technical and more aggressive. Are you agree with that ? And do you feel it as a logical evolution of your sound?
I'd say it's definitely a more aggressive sounding album compared to our previous work but I think we've steered away from it being so technical this time around. Although we wanted to make the album a bit more straightforward, we also wanted to make it super heavy so yeah, it makes sense that it sounds more aggressive.
LAM : Avez-vous changé votre façon de composer votre musique sur cet album pour avoir un son si puissant?
Architects : Pas vraiment, la façon dont nous écrivons notre musique n’a pas changé tant que cela. Nous avons passé beaucoup de temps à l’écrire et nous avons modifié beaucoup de choses durant l’écriture de ce disque mais la façon d’écrire la musique est restée la même.
2° Did you change the way to create your music for this album to have this huge sound ?
Not really, the way we write music hasn't changed so much. We spent more time writing it and we changed a lot around in the writing process for this record, but the formula for writing the music has stayed the same.
LAM : Pourquoi avoir choisi "Hollow Cromn" comme titre pour cet album? Effectivement, c'est aussi la dernière chanson et la plus calme de l'album, rien à voir avec les autres titres.
Architects : Le titre de cet album parle des groupes et des gens qui leur apporte tout sur un plateau sans rien y gagner. Quant à la chanson, nous voulions faire quelque chose de vraiment différend et ça rend super bien. C’est la chanson titre de l’album qui illustre le fait qu’on ne peut pas nous mettre dans une boîte – nous ferons ce que nous voulons avec notre musique.
3° Why did you chose 'Hollow Crown' as the title of your album? Because it's also the last song of the album and the softest one, nothing to see with the all album.
The title of the album is about bands and people who get everything handed to them on a plate without earning it. As for the song, we wanted to do something really different and it came out awesome. It’s the title track of the album to illustrate that you can’t put us in a box – we’ll do what we want to with our music.
LAM : De quoi parlent vos paroles?
Architects : Les paroles de cet album parlent de l’arrogance, des gens qui ne gagnent pas ce qu’ils mériteraient et des gens qui en général sont des cons !
4° With what do the lyrics deal ?
The lyrics on the album deal with arrogance, people not earning what they get and people who are generally dicks!
LAM : C'est votre premier "vrai" album avec Century Media (Ruin était une réédition avec bonus tracks), comment s'est passé l'enregistrement? Avez-vous changé quelque chose par rapport aux enregistrements précédents?
Architects : Nous avons de nouveau enregistré à Outhouse studios à Readind, c’est là que nous avions enregistré Ruin en 2007. Nous avions déjà travaillé là quatre fois avant donc nous connaissions les gars là-bas et nous savions que nous aurions de bons résultats. C’est toujours stressant d’enregistrer et de vivre avec les 4 mêmes gars pendant un mois mais vous traversez l’épreuve et vous avez un chouette disque à la fin !
5° It's your real first album with Century Media (Ruin was a re-issue plus bonus tracks). How was the recording? Did you change something to your former way?
We recorded at Outhouse studios in Reading again, same place we recorded Ruin in 2007. We'd worked there 4 times before this record so we knew the guys there and we knew that we'd get good results. It's always stressful recording and living with the same 4 guys for a month but you get through it and you have a sweet record at the end of it all!
LAM : Un souvenir particulier de ce moment?
Architects : Je ne crois pas que j’oublierai un jour la joie de manger un paquet de noodles sur des toast pratiquement tous les soirs pendant un mois.
6° Any special remembrance about this time ?
I don't think I’ll ever forget the joy of eating packet noodles on toast nearly every night for a month.
LAM : Nous pouvons voir le video clip de "Early Grave", la première chanson de l'album, sur votre myspace, comment a-t-il été tourné?
Architects : Tourner cette video a été plutôt simple en fait. D’habitude nous détestons les tournages de clips parce que cela te mine complètement de devoir mimer et remimer sans arrêt la même chanson, tout au long de la journée. Cette fois-ci tout a été un peu plus détendu, nous avions des amis sur place et nous connaissions le réalisateur avec lequel nous avions travaillé pour le tournage de Buried At Sea and Always, donc ça a été un bon moment.
7° We can watch the video clip of 'Early Grave' the first song of your album on your myspace page. How was the shooting?
Shooing that video was actually fairly easy going. We usually hate doing video shoots because it absolutely destroys you having to mime the same song over and over again, all day long. This time round everything was a little more relaxed, we had some friends there hanging out and we knew the director we were working with from the shoots for Buried At Sea and Always, so it was all good fun.
LAM : Vous êtes (étiez - je ne sais pas quand vous répondrez à cette interview) en tournée en Grande Bretagne. Pourriez-vous nous en dire un mot?
Architects : Oui nous sommes actuellement en tournée au Royaume Uni avec Misery Signals et A Textbook Tragedy, et jusqu’ici cela a été super bien! Nous avons joué dans des endroits que nous ne pensions pas aussi sympas, mais tous les shows ont eu un super accueil et la foule a été vraiment avec nous !
8° You are (were – I don't know when you will answer this interview) on tour in UK. May you tell us a word about it.
Yeah we're currently on tour in the UK with Misery Signals and A Textbook Tragedy, and so far it's been really good! We've played some places that we didn't think would be that good, but all the shows have had awesome turnouts and the crowds have all been really into us!
LAM : Avez-vous déjà d'autres tournées de prévues?
Architects : Nous allons faire une tournée en Europe avec Comeback Kid, Bane, Misery Signals et Outbreak en avril pendant 10 jours et on est tous très excites par cela. Nous avons d’autres tournées planifiées avant celle-là mais je ne peux pas vous dire lesquelles pour le moment.
9° Is there an other tour plan yet ?
We're heading out to Europe with Comeback Kid, Bane, Misery Signals and Outbreak in April for 10 days which we're all pretty excited about. We've got some other tours planned sooner than that one but I can't say what they are just yet.
