LAM : Est-ce que les membres de Threat Signal ont eu de précédentes expériences musicales avant d'être dans Threat Signal?
Threat Signal : Nous avons tous de l'expérience dans de peties groupes, juste des groupes locaux, tu sais. Nous jouions à la fac, mais nous n'avions pas quelque chose de sérieux. Notre batteur George, jouait dans différents groupes qui ont tournés aux USA, mais rien d'aussi important que Threat Signal.
Did all the different members of Threat Signal have some experience in music before Threat Signal?
All of us had experience in smaller bands, just local bands, you know. We played in high schools but we really didn’t have anything serious. Actually our drummer, George, he played in a couple bands in tours in the US but nothing that was as significant as Threat Signal.
LAM : Mais c'étaient des groupes de Métal ? Vous avez votre propre personnalité dans votre musique. Vous vous êtes formés en 2003. Vous êtes déjà signés chez Nuclear Blast. C'est incroyable le bon travail que vous avez fait, c'est la raison pour laquelle je voulais savoir si vous aviez de l'expérience.
Threat Signal : Beaucoup de choses sont arrivées vite, mais nous pensions, au départ, quand nous avons formé le groupe "Wahouh, c'est notre premier groupe". Nous avons passé beaucoup de temps sur les bases, nous avons beaucoup pratiqué. Nous n'avons rien commencé avant d'être pret.
But it was metal bands. I mean you’ve got your own personality in your music. You formed in only 2003, you already signed in Nuclear Blast. It’s amazing the great job you made so that’s why I wanted to know which kind of experiences you had before.
Many things are coming quick but we primary thought when we formed the band « waouh, this is our very first band ». We spent a lot of time setting the basements, practicing a lot, we didn’t start anything before we were ready.
LAM : Pourquoi avez vous choisi le nom de Threat Signal (Signal d'alarme) ? Quelle signification a ce nom pour vous ?
Threat Signal : Il n'y a pas de réeelle signification à notre nom. Kyle est venu avec un mot et Rich est venu avec l'autre et nous les avons assemblé. Et on a pensé "Oh yeah, ça sonne bien". C'était très original. Et il n'y a pas de véritable signification, mais je pense que c'est un nom de groupe incroyable.
Why did you choose the name of Threat Signal? And what does it means for you to have such a name?
There was no real meaning for this name. Kyle ( ?) came up with one of the words, Rich ( ?) came up with the other word and we put them together. And thought « oh, yeah, it sounds good ! ». It’s very original. And there’s not really a meaning to threat signal but I think it’s an amazing band name.
LAM : Maintenant vous êtes signés chez Nuclear Blast et vous avez enregistrés votre album avec Christian Olbe Wolbers (Fear Factory). Est-ce que vous espériez cela? Et comment le ressentez vous ?
Threat Signal : C'est comme un rêve tu sais. Tu rêves toujours de ça, parler à tes groupes préférés et tout ça. Fear Factory est un groupe incroyable et nous avons grandis en les écoutant, mais quand Christian m'a téléphoné et dit "Votre démo est incroyable, travaillons ensemble, je souhaite produire votre album", c'est comme Wahouh!!! C'est incroyable. Travailler avec lui était tuant. ça a été un très bon moment. Nous voyons les choses de la même façon. Il savait ce qu'il voulait faire de notre musique. Il sait poser la mélodie et l'aspect artistique par dessus. C'est tout simplement parfait de travaillet avec lui. Et signer chez Nuclear Blast, c'est le plus gros label de Métal au monde tu sais. Tu rêves toujours d'être dans un tel label, alors quand il t'envoie un contrat, c'était... Nous n'espérions même pas un contrat. Nous n'étions que 3 gosses qui écrivaient de la musique, et qui mettaient leurs trucs sur internet. Nous ne cherchions même pas un label et ils sont venus frapper à notre porte.
So now you’re signed on Nuclear Blast, and you recorded you album with Christian Olde Wolbers, Did you expected something like that ? How do you feel about it ?
It’s like a dream you know. You always dream about that, talking to your favorites bands or what ever. Fear Factory is an amazing band and we grow up listening to them, but, when Christian calls me on the phone and say « Hey man, your demo is amazing, let’s work together on your album, I want to produce your album » It’s like Whaoh !!! It’s amazing. So working with him was killer. We had a great time, we see basically eye to eye. He knows what we want to have with our music. He knows to pose the melody and the art aspect down in it. It’s just perfect working with him. And to sign on Nuclear Blast, man, that’s like the most biggest metal label in the world you know. You always dream of being on that label so when they through away for the contract, it was just, we weren’t even looking for a contract. We were only 3 kids sit and writing music. And put our stuff on the internet. We weren’t even looking for a label and they came knocking on our door.
LAM : Sur MySpace.com, vous avez écrit que vous avez mis quelques titres sur internet au début et vous avez eu de très très bons commentaires. Est-ce important pour vous de connaître l'avis de vos fans?
Threat Signal : Très important. Internet ouvre beaucoup de porte. Les socéités entendent beaucoup de musique et comme je disais nous avons mis en ligne le titre "Rational Eyes" sur garageband.com. C'était en 2004. Nous l'avons juste mis sur internet, pour avoir des avis, voir ce que les gens en pensent. Nous n'avions pas l'idée d'être propulsés n°1 sur ce site, parmis 1000 groupes de Métal. Internet est une chose merveilleuse. J'encourage tous les groupes à mettre leur musique sur internet, car si tu enregistres de la musique, des gens peuvent l'écouter dans le monde entiers.
On MySpace.com, you write that you put some tracks on the internet at the beginning and you had some really, really good comments about it. Is it important for you to know the feelings of your fans?
Very important man. Internet opens a lot of doors. The firms get to hear a lot of music and like I said, we uploaded « Rational Eyes » on http://www.garageband.com that was in 2004. We just put it on the internet to have some feedback, to see what people thought. We had no idea it will go straight to number one on that site, in a pit of 1000 Metal bands. Internet is a wonderful thing. I encourage all bands to put their stuff on there, because if you record music, people can hear it all around the world.
LAM : Pour votre musique, c'est très agressif, mais dans le même temps, cela peut être très mélodique. Comment composez vous? Jouez vous tous ensemble ou travaillez vous chacun de votre côté dans votre home studio?
Threat Signal : Nous ne sommes jamais ensemble comme un groupe, pour écrire des chansons. Nous nous retrouvons pour repeter, mais nous ne composons que quelques riffs ensemble. habituellement nous composons à la maison. Kyle le guitariste est devant son ordinateur. Il écrit les chansons comme ça, en tablature. Ensuite il envoie à Rich. Et Rich ajoute ses propres trucs par dessus. Puis il me l'envoie. Nous travaillons tous devant notre ordinateur. Nous ne nous retrouvons par vraiment pour jamer sur les chansons que nous avons écrites. Les chansons sont totalement faites, totalement écrites quand nous commençons à repeter. C'est une manière très moderne de composer. Je pense que c'est une merveilleuse façon d'écrire. Nous essayons juste d'aller plus loin. Comme quand Kyle a écrit un riff, sur son ordinateur et qu'il ne peut pas encore le jouer. C'était trop difficile ce qu'il avait écrit. Mais à force de travailler, il l'a appris et il est devenu un meilleur guitariste.
For your music, it’s very aggressive but at the same time it can be very melodic. How do you create it? How do you create your songs? I mean, do you play all together in live or do you work on home studio?
We never get together as a band, like to write songs, we get together to rehearse but we are writing we do not play together a couple of riffs stuff like that. We usually work at home, Kyle, the guitarist, and Eels in front of the computer. He just write the songs on the computer, basically tab. Then send it over to Rich. And Rich put his own thing over it. And then send it to me. We are all working together over the computer. We don’t really get together and jam all the song before they’re written. The songs are totally done, totally written when we go in and start rehearsing. It’s a very modern way of writing. I think it’s an amazing way to write. Just tries us to push harder. Like Kyle writes a riff, on the computer, he can’t play yet. It’s so hard writing on there, but just forcing him to learn it so become a better play.
LAM : De quoi parlent vos chansons?
Threat Signal : Mes chansons parlent de beaucoup de choses. Je parle de choses personnelles et de choses générales. En gros, ce que j'ai en tête au moment où j'écris. Je dirai à propos de mes paroles que tu dois lire chaque chanson et tu peux développer ta propre signification. J'aimerai te donner la signification de chaque chanson. Mais si tu lis par toi même, tu auras peut-être une idée complétement différente de la signification de la chanson. Occasionnellement une porte est ouverte au dessus de ta tête pour que tu penses par toi même, tu sais. Mais il y a beaucoup de choses négatives, mais aussi beaucoup d'idées positives dans le même temps. C'est à l'auditeur de dédicer tu sais.
What are your songs talking about?
Oh man, my songs are all over the place. I talk about personal things and in global things. Basically what it was on my mind at that moment, you know. I basically say with my lyrics, you have to read each song and you can develop your own meaning to yourself because I’d like to hear and tell you what a song means. But if you read it yourself you might have totally different idea what that song means. Occasionally a door is open over our head to think for yourself, you know. But, there is a lot of negative ideas but a lot of positive idea at the same time. It’s up to the listeners to decide you know.
LAM : C'est uniquement des choses personnelles? Pour ton inspiration ce n'est que tiré de ta vie?
Threat Signal : Oui, c'est ma vie, tu sais. Ce que je traverse tous les jours, et ce que je vis, ce que je vois écrit dans un livre, ce que je pense. Les gens peuvent le prendre comme ça evidement, tu sais. Les mots ont beaucoup de significations.
It’s only about personal things? For your inspiration it’s only something about your life?
Yeah, it’s my life you know. For I go through everyday, and what I live, what I see like I write a book, what I think. Yeah people can take it obviously you know. Word means a lot to me.
LAM : Est-ce que vous continuez de composer de nouvelles chansons?
Threat Signal : Oui, nous écrivons toujours. Tu n'y penses pas, nous avons du temps pour écrire. Nous nous concentrons sur notre prochain album et nous n'avons pas encore sorti le premier.
Do you keep creating some new tracks or?
Yeah man, we are always writing. You never thought, we’ve got time to time to write songs. We are already devoting for the next and don’t even release the first album.
LAM : Sera-t-il plus agressif ou plus mélodique? Ou dans la même veine que "Under Reprisal" ?
Threat Signal : L'album (Under Reprisal) laisse les portes grandes ouvertes. Car il y a beaucoup de parties joyeuses, mais il y a des parties mélodiques. Nous allons avoir la même approche dans un certain sens, mais nous nous développons tout le temps et nous progressons en tant que musiciens. Les chansons vont devenir de mieux en mieux. Il y aura des mélodies et il y aura des trucs durs.
Will it be more aggressive or more melodic. Or just in the same that the one that we can listen on the album « Under Reprisal » ?
The album leaves doors wide open, man. ‘Cause there are some really happy parts, but there are some melancholic parts. We gonna take the same approach in a way, but we develop all the time and we grow as musicians. The song are just gonna be better and better. There’s gonna be melody and there’s gonna be hard stuff.
LAM : En live est-ce que vous ne jouez que les titres de votre album ou ajoutez vous d'autres chansons?
Threat Signal : Oui, actuellement, nous ne jouons que les titres de l'album. Nous n'avons pas vraiment de nouveaux titres écris, que nous pouvons jouer. Nous avons des trucs écris, mais nous ne les avons pas encore véritablement repetés. C'est principalement des titres de l'albumque nous jouons et des reprises d'autres groupes parfois, juste pour nous amuser.
In live do you play only the song from your album or do you put some other songs too?
Yeah, right now, we‘re just playing songs from the album. We don’t really have anything new written yet, that we can play. We have stuff written but we haven’t really rehearsed it yet. It’s mainly stuff from the album we play around and some other bands songs sometimes, just for fun.
LAM : Gardez vous le track-listing de l'album ou ré-arrangez vous les titres?
Threat Signal : Nous ré-arrangeons un peu. Nous avons fais quelques concerts dans le coin et en fonction de la soirée, nous échangions sur quelques dates, pour voir ce qui fonctionne le mieux en concert.
Do you keep the track listing of the album or do you rearrange the songs.
Yeah we rearrange a little bit. We played a couple of shows around the area here. And depending of the night like we will switch around in a couple of shows and just play around and see what works best live, you know.
LAM : Quel est ton meilleur souvenir de l'enregistrement de l'album ?
Threat Signal : Oh, c'était comme des vacances pour moi. J'ai vraiment aimé ça. J'étais là bas et ils ont essayé la batterie pendant les 2 premières semaines alors je n'avais pas beaucoup de travail. J'allais à la plage tous les jours pour nager. C'était excellent. Nous sommes allés à LA, on s'est bien éclaté. J'ai travaillé avec Christian directement. Il a produit beaucoup de mon chant. Comme il a vraiment travaillé très dur avec moi en studio, c'était tout simplement cool. Nous vivions à l'hotel. Toute cette expérience, toute entière, de faire l'album a été extraordinaire. Christian a fait du bon travail.
I would like to know what is your best remembrance during the recording of the cd.
Oh man, it was like vacation for me. I really like that. I was down there and they try drums for the first two weeks so I didn’t have a lot of work to do. So, I was driving off to the beach every day, going swimming. That was asome. But, we go down to LA, so it was really noisy. I was only working with Christian. He produces a lot of my vocals. Like he really works hard with me in the studio and it was just cool. We lived in hostels. It’s just the all over all experience of making that album was just amazing. Christian did a cool job.
LAM : As-tu un conseil à donner pour quelqu'un qui voudrait chanter comme toi? Comment travailler, comment entrainer sa voix?
Threat Signal : Quand j'ai commencé Threat Signal, je n'étais pas vraiment chanteur tu sais. Je ne savais pas encore ce que nous faisions quand nous avons débuté. Mais nous enregistrions notre musique et devant mon ordinateur, je n'arrêtais pas de m'enregistrer. je pense que c'est un excellent moyen de progresser et de devnir un meilleur chanteur. Ecoutes tes artistes favoris, essaies de chanter comme eux, mais essaies de trouver ta propre voix à travers ça. Je m'assoie devant mon ordinateur et j'essaie des centaines de styles différents et expérimentations avec ma voix et j'enregistre. Quand tu réécoutes, tu sais si tu as été nul ou si tu as été bon. Tu peux vraiment progresser. Tu peux entendre tes erreurs. Alors fais le avec un ordinateur, enregistres toi, cela aide beaucoup.
Have you got an advice for some one who would like to sing like you? How to work, how to train his voice?
When I started Threat Signal, I wasn’t really the singer you know. I really didn’t know what we were doing when we started. But we recorded the music and I basically stated in front of my computer, and I keep recording myself. I think it’s an amazing way to better your-self and become a better singer. Listen to your favorite artists, try to sing similar as they doing, but through your own way into it. I site in front of my computer and try a hundred different styles and experimenting with my voice and recording it. When you listen to it back, you know if you suck and you know you’re good. You can really improve. You can hear where you bombs are so. Do it on a computer, record yourself, its help a lot.
LAM : Pour un savoir un peu plus sur toi, je voudrai connaitre ton livre préféré.
Threat Signal : Oh, je ne lis pas tant que ça, je regardes des films
To know a little beat more about you, I would like to know what is your favorite book?
Oh, I don’t really read that much. Watch movies…
LAM : Alors quel est ton film préféré ?
Threat Signal : J'aime beaucoup "L'effet Papillon". C'était un bon film. J'ai aimé celui-là. Il que tu vois les films d'Elivra. Tous les vieux films d'horreur.
So what is your favorite movie?
I really like "The Butterfly Effect" . It was a cool movie. I like that one. You have to watch the Elvira’s movies man. All old school horror’s
LAM : Et quel est ton cd préféré?
Threat Signal : Mon cd favori doit être de Pantera. "The Great Southern TrendKill", c'était un album incroyable. Ou "Far beyond Driven". Pantera a changé ma vie.
And your favorite cd ?
Favorite cd it got be some of Pantera. “The great southern trendkill » that’s an amazing album. Or « Far beyond Driven ». Pantera changed my life.
LAM : Avec quel groupe aimerais-tu faire un concert?
Threat Signal : Ce serait bien de jouer avec Lamb of God, c'est un groupe extraordinaire en live.
With which band would you like to play in concert?
It would be awesome to play with Lamb of God. Just an amazing live band.
LAM : As-tu quelque chose à ajouter?
Threat Signal : Et bien, quand je parles avec les fans, tu sais, je dis : "Ecoutez Threat Signal, ce n'est pas du nouveau Métal, ce n'est pas du Screamo, c'est quelque chose d'ancien mais quelque chose de neuf en même temps. Et si tu n'aimes pas vraiment la musique très lourde, nous avons beaucoup plus à offrir que ça. Nous avons un bon compromis. Si l'un d' entre vous me vois sur la route, à un concert, où que ce soit, s'il vous plait, venez me dire bonjour et buvez un bière avec moi".
Have you got something to add?
When I talk to the fans, you know, I just say: check out Threat Signal. It’s not new metal, it’s not screamo, it’s something old, but something new at the same time. And if you don’t really like really heavy, heavy music, we have a little more to offer than just that. We have a good mix.
