LAM : Bonjour, donc tu es le bassiste de Gorgoroth.
Gorgoroth : Oui, c’est exact.
1 – Hello. So you’re the bass player in Gorgoroth
Yeah, that’s right.
LAM : Avec Gorgoroth, vous êtes un groupe de black métal connu pour "vos créations impies, occultes et sataniques", comme c'est écrit sur votre site internet. Cette fois-ci, quel est le sujet de votre nouvel album “Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam”?
Gorgoroth : Depuis le début, Gorgoroth s’est toujours impliqué autour du même thème. Nous sommes un groupe de métal satanique et nous utilisons la musique et les refrains pour diffuser les versets de Satan. Cela fait 15 ans que c’est ainsi. Cette fois-ci, c’est Gaahl qui a écrit les paroles donc on a parlé avec lui pour savoir ce que signifiait chaque morceau et les métaphores qu’il utilisait. Il devait parler pour lui-même mais les paroles font partie d’un plan bien plus vaste, en tout cas lorsque vous utilisez la musique pour répandre l’ascétisme. “Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam”, le titre de l’album est lié à un philosophe catholique qui a écrit un livre intitulé “Ad Majorem Deus Gloriam” qui signifie quelque chose comme « à la gloire de Dieu tout puissant ». Et nous avons trouvé bien de dévier le titre et de remplacer le mot « Deux », Dieu, par Satan. C’est détourner ce livre majeur de l’Eglise catholique.
2 – With Gorgoroth you are known as a black metal band, for your unholy creations and occultic and satanic way, that is what is said on your website, what is your new album “Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam” talking about this time?
Gorgoroth has been occupied with the same theme since the beginning, we are a satanic black metal band and we are using the music and the tunes to spread the verse of Satan. It has been like this for like 15 years. This time, it’s Gaahl who wrote the lyrics so we had to speak to him for each track he means, all the metaphors he uses. He had to speak for himself but the lyrics are making part of a bigger agenda that is, if you sing music for spreading ascetism. “Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam”, the title of the record is linked to a catholic philosopher he wrote this book called “Ad Majorem Deus Gloriam” which means something like “all glory to mighty God”, and we found suitable to misuse this title and replaced the word “Deus”, God, with Satan. It’s misusing this important book in the Catholic Church.
LAM : Votre nouvel album semble plus noir et plus fort que le précédant, est-ce fait sciemment ?
Gorgoroth : Récemment, la partie écrite, c'est-à-dire la façon dont nous composons a un peu changé. Je pense que c’est un peu Satan et aussi to ce que nous avons eu à faire pour créer cet album car ce nouvel album est probablement le disque dont nous sommes les plus satisfaits. Dans mon opinion, c’est le meilleur album sorti de Gorgoroth dans toute l’histoire du groupe
3 – For your new album, it seems to be darker and louder than the one before, is it made on purpose?
The writing part, that is the way we are composing has changed a bit lately. I think, it’s a bit Satan and also all we had to do to create this one because the new album is probably the record we are more satisfied with. It’s the best album released in the Gorgoroth history in my opinion.
LAM : Dans quelles conditions avez-vous enregistré ce nouvel album, car vous n'êtes que 3 membres actuellement plus 2 membres lors des concerts. Comment avez-vous enregistré avec seulement 3 personnes?
Gorgoroth : C’est un processus long. J’ai commencé à écrire des choses pour cet album en 2002 et j’ai travaillé à la maison sur mon ordinateur. Donc j’ai fait toute la programmation de la batterie, la guitare, la basse et tout à la maison et j’ai fini en 2004. Nous devions trouver un nouveau batteur et celui de Satyricon a accepté de jouer sur cet album. Il vivait plutôt loin de chez nous (Bergen) et donc nous n’avions qu’une quinzaine de jours pour répéter et nous avons dû attendre un mois et en 2005 nous étions prêts à enregistrer en studios et nous avons fait la batterie. Ensuite, nous avons pris 6 ou 7 mois avant d’être prêts avec la basse et la guitare et nous sommes allés dans un autre studio à Oslo. Après encore 6 ou 7 mois, ou un peu plus, au début 2006, cette année, Gaahl a enregistré les chants et nous avons mixé et fait le reste entre février et avril. Donc nous avons travaillé sur cet album pendant plus ou moins 5 ans. Bien sûr notre travail sur nos tournées est aussi la raison d’un si long processus.
4 – In which conditions did you record the new album, because you are only three members right now plus two live members. How did you record with only three people?
It’s a long process. I started writing the materials for this album in 2002 and I worked at home at my computer. So I did all the drum programming and the guitar and bass and everything at home and I was finished some time in 2004. And we had to find another drummer, and the drummer of Satyricon agreed to play on this album. He lived quite a distance from us so we just had a couple of weeks to rehearse and we had to wait a month and in 2005 we were ready to do the drums in the studio. January 2005, we went to the studio and did the drums. Then, we took six or seven months before we were ready with the bass and guitar and we took it to the second studio in Oslo. And again six or seven months or more. And in the beginnings of 2006, this years, Gaahl did the vocals so we did the mixing and everything in a period from Febuary to April. So we have been working on this album for more or less five years. Of course the work of touring is also the reason why it has been such a long process.
LAM : Donc tu as créé toutes les nouvelles chansons toi-même, tu n'as rien créé pendant les concerts ?
Gorgoroth : Non, rien pendant les concerts. C’est uniquement moi et mon ordinateur cette fois-ci. Gorgoroth y a bien sûr contribué avec les chants et les paroles.
5 – So you created all the new songs by yourself, you made nothing during live sessions?
No, nothing in live session. It’s just only me and my computer this time. Gorgoroth contributed, of course, with all the vocals and lyrics.
LAM : Donc la musique vient toujours en premier ?
Gorgoroth : Oui. Gaahl et moi nous vivons à trois heures du studio, donc la seule façon fonctionner c’est d’avoir la musique, créer la musique et ensuite on va au studio et tout s’enchaîne… Pour cet album, les répétitions et le mixage ont été réalisés en studio et ensuite on a ajouté le chant. En fait, cela a été fait en 2006 alors que j’avais fini la musique en 2004 soit environ deux ans avant la fin de l’album.
6 – So the music comes always first?
Yeah. Gaahl and I were living three hours from the studio, so the only way we can function is having music, create the music and then you go to the studio and everything you know… On this album, the rehearsal and the mix up have been in the studio and then we added the vocals. Actually, it was done in 2006 and I had finished the music in 2004. So it was like two years before it was finished.
LAM : Est-ce que vous avez parfois envie de changer des passages musicaux après avoir écouté les paroles ?
Gorgoroth : Cette fois, nous n’avons pas changé grand-chose parce que tout était enregistré et nous n’avions pas le temps de changer beaucoup de choses. Quand on l’écoute après coup, il y a bien sûr toujours des détails comme des chants trop bas, le mixage ou des choses comme ça. Tu vois… je veux dire… parfois un autre type d’atmosphère. Mais ce ne sont que des détails et nous sommes satisfaits de l’album. Il a peut-être des points faibles mais en général, j’en suis satisfait.
7 – Sometimes, do you want to change some parts of the music after the listening of the lyrics?
This time we didn’t change much because everything was recorded and we didn’t have time to change much. When you listen to it afterwards, it’s of course always details like vocals too low and the mix you know and stuffs like that. You know… I mean… some other kind of atmosphere sometimes. But it’s all details and we’re satisfied with the album. It may have some weak points but in general I’m satisfied with it.
LAM : Vos performances live semblent particulièrement intenses, comment les préparez-vous?
Gorgoroth : Comment nous les préparons ? Eh bien, quand partons en tournée, nous avons des gens qui travaillent pour nous. Donc ils mettent la scène en place et prépare les effets pyrotechniques et tout le reste. Nous sommes seulement occupés à mettre notre maquillage et à monter sur scène.
8 – For your live shows, it seems to be really intense, how do you prepare that?
How do we prepare? Well, when we go touring, we have people working for us. So they set up the stage and prepare the pyro things and, you know… everything. We’re just occupied with putting the make up and going on stage.
LAM : Quel est ton meilleur souvenir de concert ?
Gorgoroth : J’aime beaucoup voyager. Aller en Amérique du Sud a été une sacrée expérience parce que je n’y étais jamais allé. J’aime voyager et donc combiner l’opportunité de voir ce nouveau lieu et celle de jouer en concert et d’être entouré par tous ces gens. Jusqu’ici cela a été la meilleure chose pour moi.
9 – What is your best remembrance in live?
I like to travel a lot. Being to South America has been quite an experience because I had never been to South America. I like to travel and stuffs like that so combining to see new places and to have the opportunity to play live and being surrounding by all these people. So far it’s been the best thing for me.
LAM : Pendant vos concerts, est-ce si important d'avoir le maquillage sur scène et de ressembler à des combattants avec des cartouchières et autres accessoires?
Gorgoroth : Je ne peux pas imaginer Gorgoroth sans maquillage. C’est difficile à expliquer mais cela fait partie de nous. C’est comme cela que nous présentons notre musique, notre programme, nos paroles et ce que tout cela représente. Evidemment, c’est une sorte de psychodrame. C’est seulement ainsi que nous nous présentons en live. Je ne peux pas imaginer Gorgoroth sans maquillage et costumes sur scène… c’est important !
10 – In your shows, is it so important to have the make up on stage and to look like warriors with the cartridge belt and all the stuffs like that?
I can’t imagine Gorgoroth without makeup. It’s hard to explain but it’s a part of us. It’s how we present our music and our agenda, our lyrics and what it stands for. It’s of course some kind of psychodrama if you want. So that is just the part of how we present ourselves in live. I cannot see Gorgoroth without makeup and stuffs like that on stage so… that is important!
LAM : Qui a fait le design du dernier album et qui a choisi d'utiliser cette photo pour la pochette ?
Gorgoroth : Nous avons travaillé avec un photographe sur notre dernière tournée européenne et il a fait beaucoup de photos de nous au cours de cette tournée. Nous avons décidé avec lui que nous utiliserions certaines d’entre elles pour le cd et nous avons pour faire la pochette à partir de ces photos. Donc le photographe et moi nous avons travaillé dessus ensemble. Il a fait la plupart du travail, je n’ai changé que quelques petites choses. Mais il y a des choses qui sont faites plus ou moins dans l’urgence donc je ne sais pas… ce n’est pas à cause design… c’est… je n’ai pas concentré mas efforts dessus. Tu devrais parler avec quelqu’un d’autre à propos du design.
11 – Who made the artwork of the last album and who choose to use this picture for the album?
We worked with a photographer on our last European tour and he did a lot of pictures of us on that tour. We decided with him we would use some of them for the cd and we got the opportunity of doing some artwork on it. So together, me and the photographer, we worked on it. He did most things, I did minor changes. But there’s thing done more or less in a rush so I don’t know…It’s not the artwork… it’s… I did not put all my effort on it. You’ll have to talk with someone else on the artwork.
LAM : Infernus, le guitariste de votre groupe, a actuellement des problèmes, veux-tu en parler ? Préfères-tu que vos fans s’intéressent exclusivement à votre musique ou souhaites-tu qu’ils vous soutiennent ?
Gorgoroth : Je ne peux pas faire plus de commentaires à ce sujet. Ce sont d’anciennes accusations contre lui. Il n’a pas été inculpé pour le crime dont il est accusé. De plus il semble être quelqu’un de joyeux. En réalité, il profite de la vie. Mais si vous voulez plus de commentaires à propos de ceci, c’est une affaire personnelle. Cela ne me concerne pas. Cela ne concerne pas le groupe. C’est personnel. Mais il y a un impact sur Gorgoroth parce qu’il n’a pas été disculpé des accusations portées contre lui.
12 – Infernus, the guitar player in your band, has currently some troubles, do you want to talk about this or do you prefer your fans to be focussed only on your music, or do you want them to support you in this trouble?
I cannot make more comment on it. That’s a very old charges upon him you know. So…He hasn’t been convicted for the crime he was accused of. Besides of that, he seems like a happy person. In fact, he’s enjoying life. But of course, if you want more comment on it, it’s personal business, it’s not concerning me, it’s not concerning Gorgoroth, it’s a personal matter. But now there is an impact on Gorgoroth because he’s not dismissed from charges.
LAM : Il y aura plus d'information sur le site web. Il y a actuellement deux commentaires à propos de cela.
Gorgoroth : Je ne sais pas. Nous mettons beaucoup d’infos et j’en ai marqué 102 jusqu’ici dans l’année. Donc je ne suis pas à jour dans ses commentaires. Ces commentaires le concernent, pas moi.

I don’t know. We are doing lots of entries and I’ve done like 102 entries so far in the year so I’m not updated on his comments. So these comments are up to him not up to me.
LAM : Avez-vous réalisé des vidéo-clips?
Gorgoroth : Nous sommes en pourparlers avec un réalisateur ici à Bergen, pour faire une vidéo sur le morceau 4, intitulé « Sign Of An Open Eye ». Gaahl est en Grande-Bretagne actuellement donc les membres du groupe n’apparaîtront pas dans la vidéo. Ce sera plus une vidéo artistique. Nous avons trouvé que ce morceau convenait bien pour une vidéo. Il n’y a pas trop de chant, c’est plus ou moins uniquement atmosphérique. Donc on peut envisager le visuel autrement. Mais ce n’est pas certain d’arriver. Nous sommes seulement en pourparlers. Nous espérons que cela se fera. Nous ne sortirons pas de vidéo si nous n’en sommes pas satisfaits. Je suis généralement sceptique en ce qui concerne l’utilisation de visuels comme faire une vidéo ou passer à la TV. Je suis sceptique… donc… probablement.
14- Did you make some video clips?
We are in dialogue with a filmmaker here in Bergen, about doing a video of track number 4, called “Sign Of An Open Eye”. Gaahl is in Britain at the moment so it will be a video without appearance of the band members. It will be more an art video, a stuff like that. We found that this track is suitable to do a video. It’s not too much vocal, more or less it’s just atmosphere. So you can approach the visuals in an other way. But it’s not sure to happen, it’s only a dialogue. We’re hoping for it. We will not release a video if we are not satisfied with it. I’m sceptical in general to use visuals like a video or doing TV. I’m sceptical… So… Probably.
LAM : Pour te connaître un peu mieux, j'aimerais savoir quel est ton livre préféré?
Gorgoroth : C’est une question difficile.
15 – To know a little more about you, I would like to know what is your favourite book?
That’s a hard question.
LAM : Ou... un auteur préféré?
Gorgoroth : C’est également une question difficile. Je m’inspire de plein de choses différentes donc j’éprouve des difficultés à avoir quoique ce soit de préféré. Je n’ai pas de groupe préféré, pas de musicien préféré et je prends juste des morceaux de ce qui m’inspire. Cela peut être tout et n’importe quoi !
16 – Or… favourite author?
That’s also a hard question. I take inspiration from lot of different things so I’ve got trouble with having a favourite of anything. I don’t have a favourite band. I don’t have a favourite musician and I just take part of what inspire me. That can be anything, that can be nothing!
LAM : Quel est le dernier livre que tu as lu ?
Gorgoroth : Pas quelque chose d’important.
17 – What is the last one you read?
Not an important one.
LAM : Quel est ton film préféré?
Gorgoroth : Mon film préféré ? Je n’en ai pas non plus. Bien sûr, il y a des films que j’aime et d’autres que je n’aime pas. Mais je n’ai pas non plus de film préféré.
18 – What is your favourite movie?
My favourite movie? I don’t have a favourite movie either. Yes, of course, movies I like or I dislike. But I don’t have a favourite movie either.
LAM : Il n'y a pas un genre cinématographique que tu préfères aux autres?
Gorgoroth : Pas vraiment. Je peux regarder toutes sortes de films. Je peux regarder des drames… n’importe quoi. Cela dépend.
19 – There is not a special type of movie you prefer to see?
Not really. I can watch all the movies. I can watch dramas, I can watch whatever. It depends.
LAM : As-tu un cd préféré?
Gorgoroth : Non.
20 – Do you have a favourite cd?
No.
LAM : Avec quel groupe rêverais-tu de jouer sur scène?
Gorgoroth : Aucun. Actuellement, je suis parfaitement heureux du le groupe dans lequel je joue.
21 – With which band do you dream to play on stage?
No, I don’t have a band. At the moment, I’m happy with the band I’m playing in.
LAM : Je ne voulais pas dire "jouer avec d'autre gens que ceux de Gorgoroth", je veux dire être en tournée avec d'autres groupes.
Gorgoroth : Ah, d’accord. Je ne suis pas sûr. Il y a des groupes qui sont plus en lien avec Gorgoroth que d’autres. Mais généralement, nous pensons surtout à la meilleure façon de nous présenter nous-mêmes. Donc nous pouvons aussi bien assurer les premières parties d’autres groupes qui nous permettent d’attirer un grand nombre de personnes, atteindre un plus vaste public, ça c’est bien. Ou nous pouvons, assurer nous-mêmes la tête d’affiche. Je suis très pragmatique lorsqu’on en vient à des choses comme ça. Nous entraider pour atteindre le public est la meilleure chose pour notre groupe.
22 – I mean not you to play with other guys than Gorgoroth, I mean to be touring with some other band.
Ah, ok. I’m not sure. There are bands that are more related to Gorgoroth than others. But in general we are just thinking of the best way of presenting ourselves. So we can do support for bands like we can attract lot of people, that we can reach larger audience. And that would be good. Or headlinering tour ourselves. I just think practical when it comes to things like that. Helping one another to reach audiences is the best thing for Gorgoroth.
LAM : As-tu quelque chose à ajouter, peut-être en français?
Gorgoroth : Non, je ne connais que 2-3 mots. Rien d’important.
23 – Have you got something to add? Maybe, do you know some words in French?
No… I only know a couple of words. Nothing important.
LAM : Alors, pourrais-tu nous dire quelque chose dans ta langue maternelle qui sonne si différemment du français. Quelque chose du genre "Je suis King de Gorgoroth et je serai heureux de vous voir en concert" ?
Gorgoroth : Oui. […]
24 – So could you tell us something in your mother tongue because it sounds so different from our French language? (something like “I’m King from Gorgoroth and I would be glad to see you in shows”)
Yeah. “…”
