LAM : Est-ce que tu peux te présenter en tant que membre de Grave?
Grave : Salut, ici Ronnie... batteur de Grave.

LAM : Même si il y a des morceau rapides comme ’Liberation’ ou ’Conquerer’, j’ai l’impression que votre nouvel album ’burial Ground’ sonne plus lourd et plus profond que vos précédentes productions. Est-ce quelque chose que vous avez fait intentionnellement ou est-ce juste une évolution musicale inconsciente?
Grave : Je ne sais pas si je dirais que ’Conquerer’ est un des morceaux les plus rapides de l’album mais c’est réellement le cas pour ’Liberation’. Néanmoins, ce n’est pas une décision que nous avons pris d’écrire des chansons plus lourdes pour cet album et je pense personnellement que cet album est très diversifié à l’instar du dernier titre ’Dominion VIII’. Il y a quelques chansons évidemment très rapides et quelques titres mid-tempo et il y a la chanson-titre qui est probablement la plus lourde et la plus doom des chansons que Grave ait jamais écrite.
2° Even if there is some speed tracks like ‘Liberation’ or ‘Conquerer’, I fell your new album ‘Burial Ground’ sounds deeper and heavier than your last productions. Is it something that you made on purpose or is it just your unconscious musical evolution?
I don't know if i'd say that "Conquerer" is one of the fast tracks on the album but "Liberation" certainly are, but anyway.. It's not a decision we made, to write heavier songs for this album and i personally think that the album is very diverce, just like the last one, "Dominion VIII." There's a few really fast songs for sure plus a few mid-tempo tracks and there's the title track which is probably the heaviest and most doomy song Grave's ever written.
LAM : Vous avez choisi comme titre de l’album ’Burial Ground’, qui est aussi un très long morceau down tempo. Comment avez vous fait ce choix?
Grave : Ola est venu avec le titre et on a simplement trouvé que ce titre était parfait pour cette chanson, puis nous avons choisi cette chanson pour clore l’album et ensuite tout s’est enchaîné. Je pense que ça aurait été bizarre de ne pas prendre cette chanson comme titre de l’album car elle ressort vraiment comparée au reste des morceaux. Pour ’Dominion VIII’ Il n’y a pas de vraie chanson-titre mais il y a ce morceau intitulé ”8th Dominoion” que beaucoup de gens considère être la chanson titre et cette chanson est également plutôt différente du reste de l’album. Cette chanson était également à la fin de l’album tout comme ”As Rapture Comes” qui finissait cet album-là.
3° You choose as title of your album Burial Ground, which is also a really long and down-tempo track. How did you make this choice?
Ola came up with the title and we just felt that the title was perfect for that song, plus that we choose that song to close the album and then everything just came together. I think it would have been weird to not have choosen that song for the title track as it stands out compared to the rest of the songs. For "Dominion VIII" there's no real title track but there's this song called "8th Dominion" which lots of people considered to be that albums title track and that song is also quite different to the rest of the song of that album. That song were also last on the album, just as "As Rapture Comes" closed that album..
LAM : Avez vous choisi quelque chose de différent dans votre création ou dans votre mode d’enregistrement cette fois-ci? Est-ce que vous créé toujours en répétitions?
Grave : Une approche légèrement différente, oui mais pas tant que cela. Nous avons écrit cet album de la même façon que le précédent. Ola et moi nous sommes posés à la maison et nous avons écrit des riffs, ensuite on les mis sur un serveur ftp, on les a écoutés et on a commencé à les transformer en chansons. Magnus, notre guitariste pour les concerts nous a aussi apporté quelques riffs. Cependant, quand on a trouvé que nous avions une bonne idée globale de ce que pourraient donner les chansons, Ola et moi sommes allés au studio de répétition et nous les avons essayées et assemblées pour la plupart à ce moment. Je pense qu’il n’y a que le vieux titre demo ’sexual mutilation’ que nous n’avons pas réellement jouée avant l’enregistrement. Cela nous a pris un bon moment avant que les morceaux ne deviennent ce qu’on voulait en faire. Nous avons dû participer à la tournée Nile en Nov/Dec et le plan de départ était en fait d’avoir la batterie déjà enregistrée avant la tournée mais le temps a joué contre nous. Donc quand nous sommes revenus chez nous juste avant Noël, nous avons pris quinze jours de pause et nous nous y sommes remis. Nous n’avons pas eu les chansons finies avant fin mars pour des raisons dont je ne souhaite pas parlé ici.
4° Did you choose something different in your creation or recording process this time, do you still create in rehearsals?
A little different approach yeah, but not that much. We wrote this album the same way as the previous one. Ola and I sat at home and wrote riffs, then we put all of them up on a ftp server, listened to them and began to arrange them into songs. Magnus, our live session guitar player also contributed with a few riffs. Anyway, when we felt that we had some rough ideas for the songs, Ola and i went to the rehearsel room and tried them out and we put together most of them there.. I think it was only the old demo song "Sexual Mutilation" we didn't actually played before the recording. It took us quite awhile to get the songs were we wanted them though. We had to go on the Nile tour in Nov/Dec and the original plan was actually to have the drums already recorded before the tour but time wasn't on our side.. So when we got back home right before Christmas we took about 2 weeks break and then started again.. We didn't get the songs done though until late March due some circumstances i don't want to cover here...
LAM : Vous avez l’habitude de contrôler l’intégralité du processus de production avec Ola Lindgren (production, enregistrement, mixage, et mastering) Est-ce quelque chose de confortable ou de nouveaux soucis?
Grave : La collaboration entre Ola et moi s'est super bien passée et je suis sûr qu'il est d'accord.C'est toujours un moment où on donne et on prend des deux côtés. Il y a bien eu un riff sur lequel nous n'étions pas d'accords, on le sentait de deux façon différentes et ça a fini par un morceau en deux parties. La première comme Ola le sentait, la seconde comme moi je sentais.Donc il y a eu une compréhension mutuelle et ce fut une super expérience que j'aimerais beaucoup renouveler! Les soucis que nous avons rencontrés tenaient plus à la connaissance stricte de comment faire l'enregistrement actuel. Aucun de nous deux n'avait jamais réalisé une production complète du début à la fin avec la mise en place des micros et des trucs comme ça, savoir comment obtenir un son précis etc. Mais finalement, je suis heureux que nous ayions pris la décision de tout faire par nous-mêmes.C'est quelque chose dont je suis fier! La chose la plus négative qui arrive lorsqu'on fait tout soi-même est probablement qu'on devient trop tatillon sur le son. C'est plus dur d'arriver à la conclusion de dire ”oh, ça y est... l'album EST fait maintenant!”. Lorsqu'on a une durée de travail plus limitée dans le temps parce que d'autres groupes ont réservé le studio, ou autre, c'est plus facile de juste laisser comme ça et nous savons que ça ne permet pas réellement d'avoir le meilleur malgré le nombre d'effets mis sur les guitares ou la batterie.Ce que vous entendez sur cet album c'est comment sonnent réellement les guitares et la batterie, c'est aussi simple que cela.
5° You use to control the complete production process with Ola Lindgren (production, record, mix and mastering). Is it something comfortable or some new worries?
The co-operation between Ola and I went super i'd say and i'm sure he agree. It's always a give and take and there was one specific riff that we didn't agree on how to play.. we did feel it in two different ways and it all ended that it's played in two seperate ways. The first time as Ola feel it and the second time as I feel it.. so i mean, there's been a mutual understanding and a great experience which I'd gladly would go through again! The worries we had had more to do with strictly knowledge about how to do the actual recording. None of us have never done a ful production from start to finish with setting up mics and stuff like that, know how to get a certain sound etc etc.. but in the end I'm glad we made the decision to do everything ourselves. It's something i'm proud of! The most negative thing about to do everything yourself is probably that you get toooo picky with the sound. It's harder to come to the conclusion that "ok, this is it.. the album IS done now!" When you have a more limited amount of time due to other bands have the studio booked or whatever, it's easier to just let it go and we know for sure now that it doesn't get better the more effects and shit you put on the guitars and drums or so. What you hear on this album is what the drums and guitars sound like and that's how we recorded, simple as that!!
LAM : Un souvenir particulier a propos de l'enregistrement au studio Soulless ?
Grave : Pas vraiment... tout a été très tranquille sans matériel cassé ou des ennuis du genre. En gros, on s'est enfermés dans la pièce pendant un mois et demi , du 1er avril à mi-mai pour finir le tout à temps dans le délais fixé par Regain.
6° A special remembrance about the recording time in the Studio Soulless?
Not really.. everything went very smooth with no equipment break downs or shit like that. We basically locked us in in the room for a month and a half, from 1st of April to mid-May to get it done in time for the deadline Regain set for us.
LAM : Peux-tu nous en dire plus à propos des morceaux suivants (leur thème, leur création...)?
Grave : Liberation : C’est le morceau d’ouverture et la première chanson que nous avons finalisée. On pourrait dire que c’est un chanson rapide typique de Grave avec la marque de fabrique groove au milieu. C’est une chanson facile à écouter et c’est pour cela que nous l’avons choisie pour ouvrir l’album, un coup de poing, eh eh eh...
Ridden with Belief : C’est également une des premières chansons que nous avons faites pour l’album. Après la lente intro, ça explose dans une sorte de skank beat rapide qui est aussi une espèce de marque de fabrique de Grave. Une chose particulière que j’aime avec cette chanson c’est que l’arrangement n’est pas traditionnel... vous vous en rendrez compte quand vous l’écouterez.
Burial Ground: Ah, la chanson-titre! J’avais dans l’idée de faire une chanson vraiment heavy et lente du début à la fin juste pour voir si on pouvait sans que cela devienne ennuyeux. J’avais le verse riff et le second pont et Ola est arrivé avec le premier pont et la mid-section hantée et très doom. C’est probablement le plus proche d’une chanson épique que Grave écrira jamais ou ait jamais écrit dans le passé. C’est un de mes morceaux préféré de l’album.
7° May you tell us some words about those tracks (the purpose, the creation…):
-Liberation: It's the opening track and the first song that we put together. You might say that it's a typical fast Grave song with the trademark groove in the middle. A easy song to get into and that's why we choose it as the opener of the album, a knock out hehehe..
- Ridden with Belief: Also one of the first songs that we made for the album. After the slow intro it burst into a somewhat fast skank beat which is also kinda a Grave trademark. One specific thing i like with the song is that the arrangement isn't a traditional one.. you'll get the picture when you hear it.
- Burial Ground: Ah, the title track! I had an idea of doing a really heavy and slow song from start to finish just to see if we could without it getting boring. I had the verse riff and the 2nd bridge and Ola came up with the first bridge plus the haunting and very doomy mid-section. This is probably as close to an epic song Grave will ever written or have written in the past. It's one of my favorites of the album.
LAM : Vous avez 2 guests sur cet album Matti Kärki(Dismember) au chant et Karl Sanders(Nile) qui joue un solo de guitare. Pourquoi leur avez-vous demandé de collaborer avec vous sur votre nouvel album ?
Grave : Matti a uniquement écrit les paroles de la chanson ”Dismembered Mind”. Il n’apparait pas sur l’album. Karl par contre joue un fantastique solo sur le morceau ”Bloodtrail”. Nous avons fait deux tournées avec Nile ces deux dernières années et nous sommes devenus bons amis avec tous les membres et Ola et moi avons tout simplement pensé que ce serait cool d’avoir Karl qui fasse un solo. Ola lui a envoyé un email et a demandé si il serait intéressé et il a immédiatement répondu que ce serait un honneur de faire cela!! Nous lui avons envoyé la chanson et il a fait des prises, environ 40 je pense mais celle qui a finit sur l’album est la seule que nous avons entendue et ça déchire tout!!! On voulait du classique "Karl Sanders-bends" et il a totalement répondu à notre souhait hé hé..
8° You have 2 guests on this album Matti Kärki(Dismember) on vocals and Karl Sanders(Nile) playing a guitar solo. Why did you ask them to collaborate with you on your new album ?
Matti just wrote the lyrics for the song "Dismembered Mind".. he doesn't appear on the album. Karl however play an awesome solo in the song "Bloodtrail." We've done 2 tours with Nile in the last 2 years and have become very good friends with all of them and Ola and I simply thought it would be cool to have Karl to do a solo.. Ola send him an e-mail and asked if he'd would be interested and he answered instantly that he would be honoured to do that!! We send him the song and just jammed out some takes, around 40 or so i think but the one that ended up on the album is the only one we've heard and it absolutely slays!!! We wanted some classic "Karl Sanders-bends" and he sure fulfilled our wish hehe..
LAM : Avez-vous déjà choisi la chanson qui deviendra un vidéo-clip ?
Grave : Je ne suis pas sûr qu’il y aura un vidéo-clip donc non.
9° Did you already choose the song which is to become a video-clip?
I'm not sure there will be a video-clip so nope..
LAM : Un mot que tu souhaiterais ajouter à propos du nouvel album ?
Grave : C’est un album très diversifié et peut-être le plus old school depuis ”You’ll Never See” en termes à la fois de morceaux et de production. Le son de guitare est si cru, sale et méchant mais toujours clair... difficile à expliquer mais vous comprendrez en l’écoutant. Je suis sâcrément fier de cela et j’espère que vous apprécierez!!
10° A word you would like to add about you new album?
It's a very varied album and perhaps more old school since "You'll Never See" in terms of both songs and production. The guitar sound is soo raw, dirty and ugly but still clear.. hard to explain but you'll understand when you hear it. I'm fucken proud of it and i hope you all will enjoy it!!
LAM : Pour finir nos interviews, nous souhaiterions savoir, si tu avais à choisir entre la vie éternelle et le don d’ubiquité, quel serait ton choix?
Grave : Je choisirai définitivement le don d’ubiquité, ça paraît cool hahaha =) Ce serait parfait pour moi qui dans différents groupes, finis les soucis avec les plannings de tournées!!!
11° To end our interviews we would like to know, if you had to choose between eternal life and to be ubiquitous (to be at different places at the same time), what would you choose ?
Then I'd definitly choose to be ubiquitous, that sounds cool hahaha.. =) Would be perfect for me as i play in several bands, no more conflict with the gig schedule!!
