LAM : Peux-tu te présenter en tant que membre d'Antimatter?
Antimatter : Bien sûr. J'écris avec/pour/en tant que Antimatter depuis 1998, et en 2007 j'ai créé mon propre label "Music In Stone" pour sortir les productions d'Antimatter et aussi celles d'autres artistes.
1° May you introduce yourself as a member of Antimatter.
Sure, I’ve been writing with/for/as Antimatter since 1998, and in 2007 I established my own record label Music In Stone to release Antimatter material, as well as that of other artists.
LAM : Votre album a été enregistré en 2007. Est-ce une réédition de la part de Season of Mist?
Antimatter : Non il ne s'agit pas d'une réédition, Season of Mist distribue l'album depuis sa sortie en 2009.
2° Your live album was recorded in 2007. Is it reissued by the French label Season Of Mist?
It wasn’t a reissue, Season Of Mist have distributed the album since its release in 2009.
LAM : Pourquoi avoir choisi d'enregistrer ce concert à Athènes?
Antimatter : Ce n'était pas mon choix. on m'a dit avant que l'ingénieur du son avec des habilités pour l'enregistrement et qu'il ferait un enregistrement multitrack du concert. J'ai reçu cet enregistrement environ six mois plus tard. Je ne comptais pas du tout le sortir mais quand je l'ai écouté il m'a réellement attiré l'attention. J'ai chargé l'enregistrement multitrack et j'ai commencer à le produire, et quelques semaines plus tard j'ai décidé que ce serait en fait un album live. J'ai débuté mon propre label de disque avec cette sortie et j'ai depuis signé d'autres artistes sur ce label, donc les choses bougent bien.
3° Why did you choose to record this show in Athens?
It wasn’t my choice, I had been told beforehand that the sound engineer had recording capabilities and would make a multitrack recording of the show, which I then received about 6 months later. I wasn’t planning on releasing it at all, but when I heard it, it really caught my attention. I loaded the multitrack recording up and started to produce it, and within a few weeks I’d decided that this was indeed a live album. I started my own record label with this release, and I’ve since gone on to sign other artits to the label, so things are moving well there.
LAM : Il y a plusieurs reprises dans la tracklist, comment choisis-tu les chansons que tu souhaites reprendre lors d'un concert?
Antimatter : Je suis un fan de musique donc j'adore avoir la chance de jouer et d'honorer des chansons écrites par d'autres. A chaque fois que je pars en tournée je cherche les chansons que je pourrais reprendre. Pendant la tournée d'où est tiré cet album live, j'avais 20 minutes pour moi en acoustique au milieu du concert où je jouais surtout des reprises. En fait une chanson a été laissée de côté de ce cd, mais je la jouais ce soir-là. c'est ‘Leftover Wine’ de Melanie Safka, un morceau qui m'accompagne depuis mes années d'ado hippie. A cette époque, la seule musique que j'écoutais était celle des années 67-75, et celles qui me touchaient le plus étaient ‘Leftover Wine’ et ‘Tuning My Guitar’ de Safka.
En fait j'ai commencé à jouer ‘Working Class Hero’ en 2002 lorsque Duncan a suggéré que nous l'ajoutions à notre set list sur la première tournée d'Animatter. Nous ne l'avons en réalité jamais ouée en live à ce moment là. Mais 5 ans plus tard, je l'ai adoptée pour mes propres sets.
4° There is a couple of cover songs in the tracklist, how do you choose those songs to cover them in a live show?
I’m fanatical about music, so I enjoy any chance I get to play and honour songs written by other people. Always with gigs I’m on the lookout to see what coversongs I can throw in. During the tours that this live album is taken from, I would have a 20 minute segment in the middle with just me and my acoustic where I would play mainly covers. One track actually left off the CD, put performed on the night was ‘Leftover Wine’ by Melanie Safka, this is a track that’s stayed with me since hy hippie teenage days. Back then the only music I listened to was all from the 67-75 era, and Safka’s ‘Leftover Wine’ and ‘Tuning My Guitar’ were both songs that cut pretty deep into me. ‘Working Class Hero’ I actually started playing in about 2002 when Duncan suggested we add it to our set on the first Antimatter tour. We never actually ended up performing it at the time but 5 years later I adopted it for my own sets.
LAM : Un mot sur les chansons originales d'Antimatter que tu as choisi pour le live. Pourquoi celles-ci?
Antimatter : J'ai choisi les chansons de l'histoire d'Antimatter qui avaient une forte présence sur scène. Il y avait bien d'autres chansons du groupe chantées le soir de ce concert mais pour moi un album a une certaine durée et cela excluait certaines pistes du CD. J'ai aussi choisi des chanson d'Antimatter que j'avais écrites personnellement. Je ne joue jamais les chansons de mon ancien associé Duncan patterson car elles sont pour lui, pour qu'il les chante sur les concerts, quelque que soit le nom de groupe qu'il utilise.
5° A word about the Antimatter’s songs that you choose for this live show? Why those songs.
I choose the songs from Antimatter’s history that have a strong presence on stage. There were many more Antimatter songs performed the night of this show, but for me an album is of a certain length, so I excluded tracks from the CD. I also only choose songs from Antimatter that I have written personally, I never play the songs from my old partner Duncan Patterson as they are his to use in his own shows under whatever name he is touring as.
LAM : Un souvenir particulier du concert?
Antimatter : Oui, bien sûr.Je me souviens que les tourneurs ont bien spécifié qu'ils voulaient Danny en guest, ce sur quoi nous nous sommes mis d'accords. Ensuite, les mêmes ont fait des affiches pour le concert annonçant "en présence de David Cavanach" et en dessous cette annonce ils ont mis une photo du frère de Danny, Vinny. Donc ils se sont complètement trompés sur le nom et le visage. je n'ai jamais compris pourquoi ils ont fait toute une affaire pour Danny alors qu'ils n'avaient aucune idée de qui il était ni de à quoi il ressemblait. Drôle d'histoire cependant!!!
6° A special remembrance about the show?
Yeah sure. I remember the promoters made it clear that they wanted Danny to appear as a guest musician, which we agreed upon. Then the same promoters made posters advertising the show as ‘featuring David Cavanach’, and underneath that heading they put a photograph of Danny’s brother, Vinny. So they totally got his name and face wrong.I never understood why they made a big deal out of Danny when they clearly had no idea who he was or what he looked like. Funny story though!!!
LAM : Ecris-tu sur un nouvel album studio pour Antimatter ou sur un autre projet artistique?
Antimatter : Oui, un nouveau Antimatter est en cours, même si pour l'instant je ne suis pas en position d'annoncer complètement son arrivée puisque je suis encore entrain d'écrire des parties de certains morceaux, néanmoins je suis sur la pre production pour d'autres. Il y a encore beaucoup de choses à finir donc pour l'instant je ne pourrais pas dire que c'est un album imminent, je peux dire qu'il a un titre et un concept, donc faites de cela ce que vous voulez! J'étais à cette étape pour ‘Leaving Eden’ vers fin 2005-début 2006, quand je n'étais pas sûr de l'enregistrer et cet album a bien vu le jour, donc croisons les doigts. Peut-être que l'album sortira fin 2011 si je continue avec l'énergie que j'ai en ce moment.
7° Are you working on a new studio album for Antimatter or an other artistic project?
Yes, new Antimatter material is in the making, though Im not yet in the position to fully announce its arrival as I’m still in the writing stages for some tracks, although I am onto pre-production for others. There’s still a lot of gaps though, so as yet I wont even acknowledge it as an imminent album until I’ve worked it inside out, but saying that it has a title and a concept, so make of that what you will! I was at this stage with ‘Leaving Eden’ sometime in late 2005, early 2006, where I wasn’t even convinced that I would record it, and that album saw the light of day, so, fingers crossed. Maybe this will become an album in late 2011 if I carry on with the energy I have at the moment.
LAM : Quelque chose que tu souhaiterais ajouter?
Antimatter : Oui. J'ai un site web pour mon label www.musicinstone.com pour que les gens viennent et écoutent. Cette année, j'ai signé Lisa Cuthbert et le groupe français Averse.Lisa joue de la musique à chanteuse dark sur une base de piano avec des touches celtiques et Averse mélange King Crimson avce Emperor pour créer 20min d'un étonnant épique métal progressif avec de fortes influences folks. Je viens également juste de m'arranger avec Duncan Patterson pour sortir son album 2011 ‘Herencia’, donc le label progresse bien!
8° A special word you would like to add?
Sure, I have a website for my record label up at www.musicinstone.com with music for people to come and listen to. This year I signed Lisa Cuthbert and French band Averse. Lisa plays dark, piano based singer songwriter music with a Celtic twist, and Averse jumble King Crimson with Emperor to create stunning 20 minute epics of progressive metal with a strong folk vein. I have also just arranged a deal with Duncan Patterson to release his 2011 album ‘Herencia’, so the label is expanding healthily!
LAM : Pour finir nos interview, nous avons une question particulière : si tu devais choisir entre la vie éternelle et le don d'ubiquité, que prendrais-tu?
Antimatter : Facile. La vie éternelle!
L'omniprésence ne parait pas si spéciale en tout cas et en ce momet je peux me rendre où je veux et il n'y a pas besoin d'être à plus d'un endroit à la fois.
La vie éternelle est définitivement gagnante.
9° To end our interview we have a special question: I you had to choose between eternal life and to be ubiquitous (to have the skill to be at several places at the same time), what would you choose?
Easy. Eternal life! Omnipresence doesn’t sound so special anyway, as at the moment I can be places if I want to anyway, and there’s no need to be in more than one place at one time. Eternal life is definitely the winner.
